Changes to discuss
Tell your team if you will eat much less, reduce carbohydrates or skip meals. Insulin and some medications can cause hypoglycemia when intake changes. Ask about monitoring and what to do with readings outside your range.
Do not automatically convert a recipe’s net carbohydrates into an insulin dose. Follow the method and goals your team has given you.
Do not dismiss important symptoms
Shaking, cold sweats, confusion or weakness may require checking glucose and following your hypoglycemia plan. Severe confusion, fainting or inability to swallow require urgent help. Do not force food or drinks on someone who cannot swallow.
With SGLT2 inhibitors, ketoacidosis can occur with glucose that does not seem very high. Vomiting, abdominal pain or abnormal breathing require immediate assessment. A keto recipe does not replace medical instructions.
