Keto and ketosis, explained calmly

A keto label on a recipe does not show that a person is in ketosis.

The whole day matters

On this website, we use a strict keto approach: no more than 20 g of net carbohydrates per day (total carbohydrates minus fiber), adding all meals, snacks and beverages. Ketogenic eating aims to favor ketone production; the response depends on total intake and the individual. The limit is daily, not per recipe.

You do not need to add oil, cream or butter to everything. For weight management, total energy, food quality, satiety and the ability to sustain the plan also matter.

Before starting

Nutritional ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis are not the same. The latter is an emergency. If you take an SGLT2 inhibitor, such as dapagliflozin or empagliflozin, consult before keto diets or fasting; ketoacidosis can occur without very high glucose.

Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, abnormal breathing or marked weakness require immediate assessment, especially with diabetes. Do not assume these are normal adaptation.
