A scale helps

Almonds, pecans, walnuts and macadamias have different compositions. Check the weighed amount and do not confuse a small recipe portion with a full bowl. Nut butters may include sugar, oils and other ingredients.

Using chia and flaxseed

Chia absorbs liquid and thickens mixtures. For puddings, allow it to hydrate and mix again to prevent clumps; for shakes, blend with enough liquid. Do not swallow spoonfuls of dry chia.

Seed and nut flours are not automatically low in calories. Keep packages closed and follow storage advice.

  • Weigh before serving and put the rest away.
  • Read peanut or almond butter labels.
  • Consider allergies and cross-contact.
  • Avoid sudden fiber changes if they cause symptoms.
