Weigh the food, read the nutrient
A 150 g steak does not contain 150 g of protein. It also contains water and fat. To compare it with chicken or fish, use the same state—raw or cooked—and a suitable table or label.
The appropriate daily amount depends on your situation, including kidney function, age, activity and treatment plan. A 25–30 g protein serving in a shake is a recipe formulation, not a target for everyone.
Where a shake fits
Powder can make preparation easier when needed. Check grams of protein and carbohydrates for the amount of powder you actually weigh. A scoop from one brand can differ from another.
Protein mixed with water does not necessarily cover a meal’s energy, fiber, vitamins and minerals. The full formulation and the rest of the day matter.
- Compare cost per serving and per amount of protein.
- Do not confuse whey protein with collagen products.
- With kidney disease, request an individual target before increasing protein.
