You do not need an imported pantry

Eggs, chicken, fish, fresh or frozen vegetables and canned foods can cover many preparations. Compare cost per usable amount: an inexpensive package with bones, liquid or high waste is not always the best buy for that recipe.

Rice, beans, plantain and starchy root vegetables have different profiles. Do not treat them as one food or invent a single glycemic index for all Puerto Rican preparations.

At the restaurant

Ask what the plate includes, how it is cooked and whether sauces or dressings can be served separately. Choose side portions according to your plan. You do not need to announce a diet to request a simple preparation.

  • Check whether coffee includes syrup or sweetened milk.
  • Ask about breading, glazes and sauces.
  • Compare available choices without promising an exact count without a recipe.
  • Include waste costs when buying in bulk.
