Hydration and symptoms during dietary changes

Headache, dizziness or constipation need context; not every symptom is an adjustment you should endure.

Notice what changed

Changes in timing, fluids, fiber or total food intake can affect how you feel. Record what happened and when. Check whether you are eating enough and taking medications that affect glucose, blood pressure or fluids.

We do not generally recommend salt, potassium or electrolyte supplements. Kidney disease, heart failure and several medications can make that advice inappropriate.

When to seek assessment

Persistent symptoms, fainting, vomiting, breathing difficulty or inability to stay hydrated need assessment. With diabetes and symptoms, use your monitoring plan and report important dietary changes.

  • Follow fluid instructions if you have a restriction.
  • Do not stop diuretics or other medicines yourself.
  • Increase fiber gradually if it is part of your plan.
  • Do not use the term keto flu to dismiss a medical problem.
